Tonight we had the opportunity to present The Mustard Seed to the Beasley Neighbourhood Association. This is a great group actively contributing to downtown Hamilton. Their questions got us thinking; thanks for spurring us on!
Last week, local media outlets picked up on our progress. The Hamilton Spectator ran a front-page article on Monday, May 14th, and Graham was interviewed by AM900 CHML’s Scott Thompson on May 15th (hour two). It was a busy week of discussing, sharing, and refining ideas. The Globe and Mail ran an interesting feature on cooperatives in Canada and the Local Organic Food Co-ops network website was also launched last week – what a tremendous resource!
Yesterday, we met with a very knowledgeable grocery consultant from Texas. With five generations of family experience in the grocery business, his insights were illuminating, as well as challenging. The grocery business is very competitive, with low prices and wide selection being two of the compelling drivers for many consumers’ choices. An important community leader asked us point blank: how can you succeed in prioritizing local producers, when so many grocers can’t seem to make this work? These are the sorts of questions we are considering as we move forward.
Have you seen our new business cards around town? Please pick one up and share it with a friend. We value your feedback and encouragement!
