We are sharing a series of profiles to introduce some of the volunteers who have put their time and energy into The Mustard Seed Cooperative Grocery. Enjoy this glimpse into our Co-op community!

Action Team: Location
What roles have you had in the development of The Mustard Seed?
Our action team has been meeting regularly since last October, and lately we have been touring spaces and narrowing down our options weekly, or even daily. My time has been somewhat limited lately due to the birth of our daughter Ivy in late December and my long commute. (editor’s note: while we wish we could announce the location of the Co-op, it has been a huge task finding the right commercial space and we do not have a confirmed location yet. Stay tuned for updates!)
What drew you to The Mustard Seed, and why do you volunteer?
A few of the reasons I am involved:
- I have found out that I love start ups. There is nothing more exciting than starting a new business. If you are thinking about it, do it. There is nothing more fulfilling then working towards making your dreams come true.
- I love food. I really enjoy cooking, baking, fermenting, etc, and have learned the value of good ingredients. I want the Mustard Seed to exist so that Hamiltonians can make more delicious food.
- I love Hamilton and I want to support Hamilton-positive businesses. I think one of the best ways that The Mustard Seed shows they are Hamilton-positive is that they have adopted the living wage. Through this decision they have made the statement that, regardless of the legislation, they are committed to providing sustainable employment to their employees.
- The people involved. Everyone I have met who is involved with The Mustard Seed is awesome. It is so cool to be involved with such a talented, committed, passionate, and yet diverse group of people.
Day job: Construction Project Manager
What element of The Mustard Seed are you most excited about? It is a tie between: 1) Having a single location where I can do my weekly shopping and get local, fresh, and good-for-me food. And 2) that my grocery dollars are not ‘lining the pockets’ of the richest people in our country, but instead are directly supporting local suppliers and employers.
What is your favourite local food? Beer. I love the beers being produced in our province and look forward to when there is a brewery right here in Hamilton.
Why should people join the Co-op today? You need to purchase a membership share today so that The Mustard Seed can be a successful business. Your $100 membership share loan will fund critical items such as: buying or renting a building in a good location, creating a streamlined & pleasant shopping experience, buying the initial stocking to make sure we don’t have an empty store, hiring a general manager, and buying the refrigeration equipment and cases. I have read in many places that the number one killer of new businesses is under-funding so you need to join The Mustard Seed Co-op today so that we can be a lasting success for Hamilton.
