A month ago Hamilton didn’t have a co-op grocery store. After two years of planning, and the hard working commitment of literally hundreds of people, The Mustard Seed Co-operative Grocery opened its doors on January 24, 2014. Despite the wintery conditions, our first weekend saw more than 1,000 people visit the Co-op. Since then, new people are discovering the co-op every day and we already have regulars.
The first month has confirmed that The Mustard Seed is just what Hamilton needed. We’ve had over 200 new members join the co-op since we opened, we’ve added dozens of new local suppliers in a wide variety of products, we’ve opened the bulk section, and we’re making progress finishing the teaching kitchen.
One of the most exciting things is the number of new ideas that have been sparked by great conversations in the store. The co-op was built by committed volunteers, and now that we are open there are still a lot of ways to get involved. Below are a few areas we are looking for volunteers:
- Local supplier information gathering & product labelling
- Store cleaning and re-stocking
- Help on large order receiving days
- Event planning for our upcoming AGM and Grand Opening
Please email Sarah if you are interested in getting involved with any of the above. Volunteering is an excellent opportunity to be involved in the active life of our co-op and has many benefits.
Grocery Bike Delivery
THAAT Co-op is Hamilton’s first sustainable urban delivery service specializing in the convenient, efficient, emmissions-free delivery of goods (up to 500 lbs), using cargo bikes, trikes and trailers.
Monday through Saturday, THAAT Co-op offers late afternoon delivery of groceries to your home. Delivery costs $5 (up to $100 worth of groceries), serving the lower city between McMaster University’s main campus and Wellington Street.
So if you walk, cycle, or take transit to the Mustard Seed Co-op, don’t worry about how to get everything home. Let your cashier know you’d like delivery. They will complete the delivery slip, include your delivery fee on your bill, and provide you with a stub that includes a time frame for delivery. It’s THAAT easy!
Hamilton Bike Share – Vote to have a depot at the Co-op!
Also on the topic of bicycles: The City of Hamilton, in partnership with Social Bicycles, will be implementing a bike share program in Hamilton early this summer. The program will offer a system of 750 bicycles and 80 stations and is funded by Metrolinx Quick Wins. SocialBicycles will operate the system under a non-profit operating entity and will be funded through a hybrid approach of local sponsorship and user fees. It’s a healthy, sustainable, and affordable form of public transportation.
Hamilton Bike Share is in the initial stages of implementation, preparing for a system launch in early summer. Planners at Social Bicycles and the City of Hamilton are currently collaborating on station site selection. The public can provide suggestions on station locations through Social Cyclist or provide suggestions via email:firstname.lastname@example.org, or phone: 905-546-2424 ext. 2553. We’d love to see a depot in front of The Mustard Seed so please vote for YORK AT INCHBURY!
If you haven’t stopped by the store yet, drop by soon to pick up your membership card and passport. If you’re not yet a member, check out the store – you don’t need to be a member to shop at the co-op. It’s your store – let us know your thoughts by taking an exit survey or leaving some comments on the feedback board. Our collective vision is what will make our store successful as we grow. Thanks again for being a part of this adventure!
